Cliff “Pali” Ahue - He Mele No Maui-a-Kalana

from by Pamela Polland

about

This chant (and hula) describe the feats of Maui, the demigod: using his giant fish hook to pull the Hawaiian islands to the surface of the sea, snaring the sun to slow it down so his mother could dry her kapa (barkcloth), separating the sky from the earth and stealing the secret of fire to give to humans. It was from Haleakala that Maui snared the sun.
